France fines Shein 10,000 euros, asks it to verify customers' ages

A Paris court has ordered online retailer Shein to implement age verification measures for all "adult products" sold in France and fined it 10,000 euros for each violation, following an uproar over sex dolls with childlike features sold by the online store.

The court rejected the French government's request to suspend the platform for three months, saying it would be a "disproportionate" measure. The decision eases some of the pressure Shein is facing in France.

“We welcome this decision. We remain committed to continuously improving our inspection processes, in close cooperation with the French authorities, with the aim of setting some of the highest standards in the industry, and we are stepping up these efforts,” a Shein spokesman said after the decision was announced. “Our priority remains protecting French consumers and ensuring that we comply with local laws and regulations,” he added.

Shein is at the center of a scandal after its online store was found to be selling banned weapons and sex dolls that resembled children. The French government unsuccessfully tried to suspend its operations on November 5, less than two hours after it opened its first brick-and-mortar store inside the BHV department store in Paris.

Shein suspended its online marketplace — where third parties list their products — but its clothing website remained accessible. The company also stopped selling sex toys globally.
