Britain unveils underwater drones and artificial intelligence to respond to

At a time of heightened tensions with Russia, the UK has unveiled a new defence strategy for the Atlantic, focused on the use of advanced military technology, including autonomous underwater drones and artificial intelligence systems.

According to the British Ministry of Defense, the initiative comes in response to increased activity by Russian submarines and ships, including the known spying vehicle Yantar, which was located last month in UK waters.

At the heart of the strategy to be implemented under the “Atlantic Bastion” program is the SG-1 Fathom, an autonomous underwater drone capable of continuously patrolling the depths and identifying potential threats through powerful acoustic sensors. The data it collects is analyzed by an artificial intelligence system, trained with decades of information from British naval operations.

"Fathom listens and monitors any underwater threats in real time," explains Katie Raine, program director at the company "Helsing", which collaborated on building the drone.

The plan also includes unmanned ships, experimental helicopters and giant underwater drones, such as the 12-meter-long, 19-ton Excalibur. These vehicles will serve to protect undersea cables, pipelines and energy networks, which are considered a vital part of British national security.

According to authorities, Russian activity has increased by 30% in the past two years, while Moscow's submarines are accused of attempting to map British underwater networks. The National Security Committee warns that any attack on them could cause catastrophic damage to the country's financial and communications systems.

Admiral Sir Gwyn Jenkins warned that Britain's dominance in the Atlantic is shrinking as Russia continues to invest heavily in its submarine fleet. Moscow, on the other hand, has described the British reaction as "hysterical" and part of a strategy to increase tensions within NATO.
