Heavy bombings over Tehran, air defense systems activated

Tehran activated its air defense systems this evening after witnesses reported heavy attacks in the Iranian capital, according to Sky News.

Iran's Energy Ministry was quoted by state media as saying that electricity was cut off in Tehran and Alborz provinces following attacks on electricity facilities.

The deputy energy minister later said that power outages in eastern Tehran had been resolved, according to the Mehr news agency.

On Sunday, Iran warned of escalation after Israeli airstrikes hit several universities, including ones that Israel claimed were used for nuclear research and development.

The country's Revolutionary Guard warned that Iran would consider Israeli universities and branches of American universities in the region "legitimate targets" if it was not offered security guarantees for Iranian universities, according to state media.

American colleges, including Georgetown, New York and Northwestern universities, have campuses in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

On Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said dozens of universities and research centers had been hit, including the Iran University of Science and Technology and the Isfahan University of Technology.
