CNN Analysis: Venezuela Has Not Only Oil, But Also Strategic Minerals That the

US President Donald Trump has declared that American companies will have access to Venezuela's vast oil reserves, but his administration's attention is also focused on the country's other natural resources.

According to experts, Venezuela possesses unconfirmed amounts of minerals, metals and rare earth elements, essential for strategic industries such as defense and technology. These resources are considered essential to US national security.

However, experts warn that exploiting these resources is difficult, writes CNN. The real quantity and economic value of the minerals remain unclear, while companies face significant security risks, as many mining areas are controlled by armed groups and illegal miners.

Another obstacle is the processing of rare earth minerals, which is dominated by China. According to the International Energy Agency, China accounts for over 90% of global processing of rare earth elements, making it difficult for the US to wean itself off its dependence on Beijing.

Venezuela is not listed by the U.S. Geological Survey as a country with confirmed reserves of rare earth elements. However, the country is believed to have deposits of coltan and bauxite, minerals that contain critical elements such as tantalum, niobium, aluminum and gallium.

Experts point out that after decades of rule by Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro, reliable geological data is lacking, while investments are minimal. According to the analysis, despite the potential, Venezuela is not expected to play a significant role in the global market for critical minerals for at least the next decade.
