Philippine government on alert/ How Filipino workers are being trafficked in

The Philippine Bureau of Immigration expressed deep concern over the increasing number of Filipinos being trafficked to Albania. The bureau announced that two days ago, three Filipinos were stopped by immigration officers at Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and prevented from boarding their flight to Malaysia.

They claimed to be tourists, but later admitted that they had been promised jobs in Albania as domestic helpers, factory workers and waiters, the Office reported.

The three detained Filipinos claimed to have paid between 34,000 and 74,000 Philippine pesos or 600 to 1,500 US dollars to recruiters they had contacted via Facebook Messenger.

After sending the payments, the Bureau of Immigration said the suspected recruiters blocked the three Filipinos online and left them without further instructions or valid documentation.

“We are now seeing a significant increase in illegal departures to Albania, and these are not isolated cases,” said Bureau Commissioner Joel Anthony M. Viado in a statement.

Viado said that the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) has been informed so that more efforts can be made in pursuing illegal recruiters./Kapitali.al
