Gerd 'The General''s escape ends, arrested in Belgium, sentenced

Gerd Gjinarari, otherwise known as Gert the General and considered one of the most prominent figures in the criminal world in Albania, has been arrested by Belgian authorities.

Gjinarari was declared an international wanted man after being sentenced to life imprisonment by Italian justice for the elimination of Naim Zyberi, another well-known name in the criminal world in Tirana during the 1990s.

The serious incident was recorded in 1997 in a hospital in Milan, where Zyberi was receiving treatment.

Investigations revealed that Gjinarari, together with Arben Grori, managed to enter his room by pretending to be relatives of the injured man. They carried out the execution using a firearm, which they kept hidden in a bouquet of flowers. The Italian court sentenced Gjinarari to life imprisonment for this crime, while in 2014 he was extradited to Albania to serve this sentence.

In 2019, the Korça Court decided to release him on parole, a move that provoked much debate and strong public reactions. This decision was later overturned by the Court of Appeal, which ordered that he be returned to prison to serve the remainder of his life sentence. However, Gjinarari evaded the execution of this decision and fled, becoming an international wanted fugitive. Now, following his arrest in Belgium, extradition proceedings are expected to begin.
