Free internet in 61 municipalities, Albania officially launches EU-funded

Albania officially launched the WiFi4WB initiative, which envisages the deployment of free public Wi-Fi hotspots in 61 municipalities across the country. This project is part of the program for digital transformation and bringing Albania closer to European Union standards.

The project launch ceremony was held at Kruja Castle, one of the most visited cultural destinations in the country.

WiFi4WB is part of the EU4Digital (EU for Digitalization) project, co-financed by the European Union and the German Government, and implemented by GIZ. The initiative envisages providing free public WiFi to around 500 municipalities in the Western Balkans and is part of a broader plan to accelerate the digital transition in the region, promoting the integration of the Western Balkans into the European Union's Digital Single Market.

After the full implementation of the initiative, citizens and visitors will have free internet access in squares, parks, libraries, schools and cultural sites throughout the country.

“WiFi4AB is a simple idea with a powerful impact: free internet in 61 municipalities of Albania, creating access to digital services, information, learning and communication for all. This project is not just about internet connectivity. It aims to empower communities, support local development and bring the Western Balkans closer to the EU’s Digital Single Market,” said EU Ambassador Gonzato.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sports, Lira Pipa, linked the initiative to the strategy for developing tourism throughout the year.

"WiFi4WB means more information and orientation for tourists, more accessibility. Citizens, local businesses and cultural centers benefit from this initiative. The Museum in Kruja Castle is one of the most visited cultural sites in Albania, where only a year ago it was visited by about 200 thousand tourists. The main priority for us is tourism throughout the year and cultural sites carry the main weight of year-round tourism," said Deputy Minister Pipa.

Telecommunications operator Vodafone was selected through a public tender developed by GIZ to expand and maintain Wi-Fi infrastructure and provide free internet service in designated public locations throughout Albania.

The WiFi4WB initiative will improve access to digital services, education and public information, while supporting small businesses, improving the visitor experience and strengthening local tourism. By providing free and reliable internet in public spaces, the initiative also promotes social inclusion and helps narrow the digital divide. /Ekofin
