China confirms tariffs on EU dairy products after investigation

China has confirmed it will impose tariffs on a wide range of dairy products imported from the European Union, the Ministry of Commerce in Beijing said today.
"The tariffs will range from 7.4% to 11.7% depending on the company and will come into effect this Friday," the ministry said in a statement.
This means that China has set tariffs significantly lower than the temporary tariffs of 21.9% to 42.7% imposed in December.
"The tariffs will apply over the next five years to certain types of fresh and processed cheese, as well as milk and dairy cream with a higher fat content, which are intended primarily for human consumption," the ministry said.
A list published by the authority shows that companies from Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy are affected.
However, the tariffs are unlikely to have a direct impact on consumers in Europe.
China's Ministry of Commerce has been investigating the products for suspected unfair subsidies since August 2024.
A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stressed that the investigation was conducted in accordance with the principles of fairness, impartiality and transparency.
The ministry concluded that EU dairy products were subsidized, which had harmed Chinese producers.
Beijing's investigations are seen as a countermeasure to Brussels' tariffs, imposed in November 2024, on electric vehicles made in China.
