Sad news comes, the former Serie A footballer did not make it after the accident. He passes away at the age of 33

The football world received the sad news today that Marios Oikonomou has passed away at the age of 33. The former Greek defender had been in serious condition since last week, when a car hit him while he was riding his motorcycle.

The former footballer had been hospitalized in Ioannina since May 23, in serious condition after the accident that shocked Greece and beyond. He was a well-known name, especially in Italian football, where he had played for many teams, including Cagliari, Bari, Spal and Bologna, while with the latter he had managed to return the team to the elite of Italian football.

Oikonomou ended his playing career in 2024, after a final stint at Panetolikos. He had previously played for AEK Athens and Copenhagen, with the latter winning the Danish league title in 2022. After ending his career, he returned to his hometown of Ioannina, where he unfortunately passed away in a tragic accident.
