Michel Platini harshly criticizes VAR: I'm tired of its interventions

Michel Platini has once again reignited the debate over the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, calling for major changes to the way the technology is implemented in football.

The former UEFA president and three-time Ballon d'Or winner criticized the widespread use of VAR during an interview on RMC Sport's 'After Foot' show, stressing that the technology is changing the essence of the rules of the game.

According to the French legend, VAR should only be used in very specific cases, especially for verifying offside positions.

"If I were in FIFA's position, which I'm not, I would only use VAR for lines and offside situations, in situations where it is extremely difficult for the referee to see the case clearly," Platini said.

He was particularly critical of VAR interventions in handball cases, arguing that such decisions are often subjective and are forcing unnecessary changes to refereeing rules.

"I'm tired of VAR interfering in handball situations. A handball can be intentional or unintentional. They are changing all the refereeing rules just to adapt them to VAR," concluded the former UEFA president.
