After the US warning, experts speak out/ Who are the "Lone Wolves" of Iran that could strike in Albania?
Security expert Radion Qiriazi warned on OFF the Record with Andrea Dangli on A2 CNN that Albania could also be the target of hybrid threats, including terrorist attacks by so-called "lone wolves."
"Regarding terrorist attacks on Albania, I think the probability is higher than what was discussed many days ago in Albania for direct weapon strikes, since terrorist attacks allow for what is called possible deniability which means attribution becomes very difficult for the government. And it is always possible for a government to deny that they are connected or funded by the government of Iran. All the incidents that I mentioned earlier have been observed to be associated mainly with the Ashab Aljamin group which is different to translate now directly is the Islamic Movement of the Righteous Companions. It reminds us of the Homeland Justice group, a group which has consistently carried out cyber attacks four times against the Republic of Albania, only this other group's approach is more direct," he said on Off the Record with Andrea Dangli on A2 CNN.
Qiriazi emphasized that one of the main risks are radicalized individuals, known as "lone wolves," who act independently, with little or no communication with organized networks, making it difficult to prevent them.
"Another major concern in my opinion regarding terrorist attacks, more than coordinated activities by organizations, would be lone wolves. They are typically one individual or two, maximum three individuals, who act with extremely low coordination with each other, but have a common goal and most of their actions, so the interactions they have, are minimal and their actions are taken through their free initiative. Of course they have an ideology that they support and they have a goal, a political end that they must achieve through their terrorist acts, but these individuals become extremely difficult to intercept because they do not have continuous communication with a genuine network, which can be easily identified and at the same time for the most part they live an ordinary life, I would say, until the moment of their activation. So to conclude, the risk of terrorist attacks exists. I think that in the case of Albania it is not high."
Despite the fact that according to him the risk in Albania remains low, Qiriazi appeals to security institutions to be more transparent and proactive in informing citizens, to avoid panic and to increase awareness.
The expert added that in the event of a possible state-linked attack, Albania should coordinate with allies and follow collective security mechanisms, including activating NATO procedures.
According to him, Iran's strategy includes activating sleeper cells or collaborators in Europe, who can act on coded signals. He cited several recent incidents in countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and Greece, which are linked to the spread of tensions and isolated acts of violence.
"It was expected that after the February 28 attack, part of Iran's asymmetric war strategy is the activation of hybrid cells or terrorist cells. More specifically, those in question in Europe are what are called sleeper cells, that is, agents or collaborators of the Iranian regime, or of the Revolutionary Guard, who receive the message. On March 9, there was an interception of radio signals in Western European countries. In Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, security agencies noticed a signal disconnection in ordinary communication. What they noticed was a coded message that was impossible to decrypt and this was interpreted for the first time as a signal that the Iranian regime was giving to various terrorist cells. Then we saw a series of concrete attacks. On March 9, we saw an object burning at the entrance to a synagogue. On March 11, we again have a group inside Greece, which took responsibility for the expression of hate speech and anti-Semitism again near a synagogue. On March 13, five people are arrested in Rotterdam for an attack on a synagogue. On March 16, we have another explosion in Amsterdam, near a Jewish school, and in London, four ambulances were set on fire outside a synagogue during a protest on March 23.
