US Congressman Eliot Engel has passed away at the age of 79.
He represented the state of New York in the House of Representatives for more than three decades, from 1989 to 2021, being one of the most recognizable figures in American politics.
Engel was known as a strong supporter of the Albanian cause in the United States, especially for his commitment to the defense of Kosovo during the war years.
During the conflict in Kosovo, he called on then-US President Bill Clinton for military intervention to stop the ethnic cleansing of Albanians by Serbian forces.
His contribution continued after the war, where Engel was one of the voices in favor of Kosovo's independence.
