"Trump insulted Rutte"/ Secrets emerge from tense closed-door meeting in the US
US President Donald Trump expressed his frustration with NATO allies in a heated meeting with Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Wednesday - and hinted that he was considering retaliation for a lack of support for the war on Iran.
Rutte met Trump behind closed doors as part of a long-planned visit that quickly turned into a life-support mission after the US president repeatedly threatened to leave the alliance because countries like Spain and France refused to support the US-Israeli conflict with Tehran, which has reached a fragile ceasefire.
According to two European officials and a person familiar with the matter who were briefed on the talks, Trump used the White House meeting as a venting session for the president to express his frustration over Europe's refusal to participate in the Iran operation.
“It was a mess,” the top European official said. “The conversation was nothing more than a tirade of insults.” Trump “apparently threatened to do almost anything.”
This official and the person familiar with the matter said that Trump also signaled that he was considering options for retaliation, but did not go into details, Politico quotes.
Trump is believed to have told attendees that he wanted concrete action from allies to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible.
However, a White House official said the president did not make any demands on the alliance in his conversation with Rutte.
“As President Trump said, NATO was put to the test and they failed,” the White House official said. “He has no expectations for NATO at this point and he didn’t ask for anything, even though it’s a fact that they benefit from the Strait of Hormuz much more than the United States.”
After the meeting, the US president publicly rebuked NATO allies and revived the ghost of his campaign to annex Greenland.
NATO spokeswoman Allison Hart told POLITICO that Rutte and Trump “had a very frank conversation,” but dismissed accusations that the conversation went badly, calling it “constructive.” “I sensed his frustration that he felt that many allies were not with him,” Rutte said at an event on Thursday.
