Meta appeals to the Constitutional Court against the Supreme Court decision that

The leader of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, has filed a request with the Constitutional Court for his release from prison, after the Supreme Court upheld the security measure of "prison arrest".

The request was made through lawyer Kujtim Cakrani and aims to overturn the decision that has kept Meta behind bars since October of last year.

Meta was arrested on October 21, 2024 and is being investigated by SPAK under suspicion of a series of criminal offenses committed in collaboration with his wife, MP Monika Kryemadhi, and other officials.

According to SPAK, they are suspected of using state functions to favor private companies, for dubious lobbying in the US, and for concealing wealth through real estate transactions.

Kryemadhi is being investigated for "money laundering", "corruption" and "failure to declare assets", but she has been given the lighter measure of "compulsion to appear". The same measure has also been left for Ema Çoku, suspected of money laundering, and Piro Xhixho, for passive corruption.

Meta, meanwhile, remains the only one under the measure of "prison arrest", for which he is now requesting review by the Constitutional Court.
