US statement for May 11, Tela: A profound shift in US policy priorities in the region

Journalist Andi Tela, commenting on the show "The Unexposed" on MCN TV on the statement of the US Embassy in Tirana regarding the May 11 elections, raised questions about the US administration's approach to democracy in Albania. He said that unlike the elections four years ago, where the Embassy reacted within 2-3 days and clearly mentioned the government or the opposition, this time the statement came 16 days after the end of the electoral process and contained only a general congratulations to the Albanian people, without specific references to political parties.
"The statement contains only two sentences, very different from previous positions. One must ask whether the US is changing its approach and no longer wants to give 'lessons' about the elections in the Balkans, or whether this indicates a conscious distancing from the electoral process in Albania."
For the first time, the US had no reaction during the campaign nor any visible engagement after the elections, which may indicate a profound change in American policy priorities in the region.
"This statement should be seen as a signal to understand how interested the new American administration is in Albanian democracy and how much in Albania as a strategic position in the Western Balkans," Tela said.
