Nano's arrest with America's blessing? The former first US ambassador to Tirana tells the truth

With a long diplomatic career in the Balkan region, Hill is a direct witness to Albania's journey, from ground zero of democracy to today's reality 35 years later, still with the same calls for Albania to Europe.
In a conversation for "Exclusive" with Top Channel journalist Kristi Gongo, Hill states that the US had nothing to do with the arrest of Fatos Nano a year after the '92 elections.
-After the DP's victory in the '92 elections, a year later, the opposition leader, Fatos Nano, was imprisoned and there is a narrative that this was done with the permission of the US?
Hill: No, not at all. I can say that for sure because I was here until the summer of 1993, and I can tell you personally that this is 100% false. I mean, I was here. And I have never heard of a case in Europe, certainly not, but anywhere, where the American ambassador said: 'oh, put him in jail.' I have never heard of anything like that. And I know that it is a bit of a legend here, but I just don't accept that it ever happened.
-So you didn't authorize Nano's arrest?
Hill: No, no, it has nothing to do with us. Of course not. Although after I left Albania I can't say if anyone was involved, but I doubt it. I really doubt it. I think it was convenient for some people to say: 'oh, he's in jail because of the Americans,' but that's more of an anti-American statement than anything else.
