The number of Albanians with residence permits in Greece is falling

The number of Albanian immigrants with a regular residence permit in Greece decreased during 2024.
According to the data of the Greek Ministry of Immigration, at the end of October of this year, 275,630 Albanian citizens with regular residence permits were registered in Greece, which constituted 57.2% of regular foreigners in the neighboring country.
To this number is added a category of citizens who emigrated from Albania years ago, members of the Greek minority, who stay in Greece with a special status, that of "homogeneous", and make up about 70% of this category of immigrants who, in total, Greece in 2024 was 20,557 people.
Meanwhile, in December of a year ago, according to official Greek data, 285 thousand 842 Albanian citizens were registered in Greece, which constituted 60.5% of foreigners with regular residence.
Unlike other nationalities of foreigners where men dominate the vast majority of foreigners (70%-90%), among Albanian immigrants, according to the data of the Greek Ministry of Immigration, 54% are men and 46% are women.
Even the irregular emigration of Albanians to Greece has decreased according to the data of the Greek Ministry of Immigration. In the ten months of 2024, Albanians accounted for about 5% of the 11,161 foreigners who entered Greece as refugees without regular documents and sought international protection.
Citizens from Albania have the lowest recognition rate for asylum among foreigners for requests in the first instance, where in the first ten months of this year only 1.03% of requests received a positive response from the Greek asylum authorities.
According to the data of the Greek Ministry of Immigration, the number of Albanian immigrants with a regular residence permit in Greece has decreased year after year.
In December 2021, 435 thousand 642 Albanian citizens with regular residence permits were registered in Greece, which constituted 62.8% of irregular foreigners.
A part of the Albanian immigrants in this period began to move massively from Greece to other countries of the European Union and Great Britain due to the Greek economic crisis.
Other factors of the decline in the number of Albanians with residence permits in Greece, according to immigration researchers, are related to the procedures for issuing residence permits, which continue to move slowly, while a category of second-generation Albanian immigrants have benefited from Greek citizenship, no longer applying for a residence permit./ VOA
