Wall Street Journal: EU plans international mission to open Strait of Hormuz, may exclude US and warring parties
The Wall Street Journal has uncovered a very important development regarding the future of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to reports, European countries are preparing a plan to create a broad coalition of states that would help guarantee free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. The plan includes sending naval mine-clearing ships and other naval military assets.
However, this project would only be realized after the end of the war and could exclude one ally, the United States of America.
More specifically, according to American media, several European countries are considering creating an international mission aimed at restoring safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
The initiative envisages the deployment of mine-clearing ships and naval military assets, without the participation of the US, Israel or Iran.
French President Emmanuel Macron said the plan is for an international defense mission that will not involve "warring parties."
European diplomats familiar with the discussions emphasize that the European ships will not operate under American command.
The goal of this initiative is to restore the confidence of shipping companies to use this strategic corridor again, after the end of the conflicts, which according to officials may last longer than expected.
According to the report, Germany is expected to participate in this mission, which would constitute a significant change in Berlin's stance, which has so far been cautious about getting involved in military operations.
Germany's participation could significantly strengthen the mission, as the country has greater financial resources compared to the United Kingdom and France, as well as key military capabilities considered essential for the success of the operation.
According to the same official, Berlin could announce its commitment as early as Thursday. This plan, according to the WSJ, is part of broader international efforts to guarantee free navigation in one of the world's most important energy arteries, at a time of high geopolitical tensions.
