Netanyahu's spokeswoman: Meeting with Trump on December 29

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will hold talks with US President Donald Trump on December 29 to discuss next steps in the US-led peace plan for the Gaza Strip, an Israeli government spokeswoman said on Monday.

Israeli media reported that Netanyahu would travel to the United States between December 28 and January 4, but the spokeswoman declined to confirm this.

Netanyahu's office announced about a week ago that Trump had invited the Israeli leader to the White House "in the near future."

The next phase of the peace plan is expected to begin after Hamas hands over the last body of the Israeli hostage, in exchange for the bodies of 15 Palestinians held by Israel.

On Sunday, Netanyahu said the focus of the meeting would be ending Hamas rule in Gaza and ensuring it fulfills its "commitment" to the ceasefire plan, which calls for the demilitarization of the enclave.

He added that the second phase of the ceasefire will be "more difficult."

Despite more than 590 Israeli violations, a US-brokered ceasefire in Gaza has been largely in effect since October 10.

Israeli forces have killed at least 360 Palestinians in the enclave since the ceasefire began, bringing the total death toll to over 70,000.

The first phase of the ceasefire was mainly related to the exchange of Israeli and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, as well as Israel's withdrawal from parts of Gaza.

The second phase of the agreement would deal with post-war governance, a deeply complex issue that remains largely unresolved, with only a vague US plan.

Still to be determined are the issues of leadership, future Palestinian self-determination and the role of any international stabilization force./ DPA News.
