Following the assassination of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in a reported US-Israeli attack, the question of his successor has come under the spotlight. Among the names mentioned as potentially influential in clerical consultations is that of Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the founder of the Islamic Republic. Hassan Khomeini, 53, is the best-known grandson of Ruhollah Khomeini and is considered a relatively moderate figure within the religious establishment. He has close ties to the reformist camp, including former presidents Mohammad Khatami and Hassan Rouhani, who pursued policies more cooperative with the West during their terms.
Currently, Khomeini serves in a symbolic role as the custodian of his grandfather's mausoleum in southern Tehran. He has held no government office, but he has been involved in public debates and is seen by some as a counterweight to the hardline stance that has consolidated during the Khamenei years, particularly within his inner circle, which includes his son Mojtaba Khamenei. The debate over a more moderate successor has gained ground in the wake of recent unrest in the country, as an attempt to stabilize the system in the face of growing discontent.
Although loyal to the Islamic Republic established after the 1979 revolution, Hassan Khomeini has occasionally expressed critical views. In 2021, he opposed the Guardian Council’s decision to disqualify reformist candidates from the presidential race, a move that paved the way for the election of Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash in 2024. He also called for transparency after the death of Mahsa Amini in 2022, an event that sparked massive protests across the country. However, during the bloodiest unrest since the revolution, he sided with the establishment and condemned calls against the supreme leader.
A decade ago, Khomeini tried to run for the Assembly of Experts, the body that elects the Supreme Leader, but his candidacy was blocked. Officially, his religious credentials were cited – he holds the rank of Hojatoleslam, one level below Ayatollah – but many analysts saw the decision as an attempt to curb reformist influence. He has also been perceived as critical of the political role of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), although he is reported to maintain close ties to this elite force.
Described by relatives as a theologian with progressive leanings, especially on issues such as women's rights and social freedoms, Khomeini supported the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated by the Rouhani administration, which was later canceled by the US administration in 2018. He speaks fluent Arabic and English and studied theology in Qom at the insistence of his grandfather. While the future of Iranian leadership remains uncertain, Hassan Khomeini's name is increasingly being mentioned as a figure with the potential to influence the future direction of the Islamic Republic.
