Extreme heat wave sweeps across Europe/ Temperature records broken in France,

An early and intense heat wave has swept across Western Europe, bringing record temperatures for May in some places and warnings of a further deterioration of the situation in the coming days.

In France, more than 20 cities have recorded their highest temperatures ever for the month of May, while the meteorological service warns that this could be just the beginning of a longer heat wave. French authorities have put 31 regions on high temperature alert, activating the heat alert system for the first time in May since it was created in 2004, writes the Guardian .

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom broke its all-time high for May, with Heathrow near London recording a temperature of 33.5°C. Meteorologists are predicting temperatures could reach 35°C in some areas of the country.

In Spain, the situation is also severe, with temperatures reaching 38°C in some regions over the weekend and expected to approach 40°C in the coming days, especially in the south and in the country's main valleys.

According to the French meteorological service, the phenomenon is caused by a "heat dome", where masses of hot air from North Africa are trapped by high atmospheric pressure. Experts warn that such events will become more frequent, more intense and earlier as a result of climate change.

In several French cities such as Paris, Bordeaux and the Atlantic area, temperatures well above the seasonal average have been recorded, while in some cases serious consequences for the health of citizens during outdoor sports activities have been reported.

Meteorologists point out that the heat wave could last for several more days, making this one of the earliest and most intense heat episodes ever recorded in Europe for the month of May.
