Turkey deploys Patriot air defense system, Erdogan-Iran: Missiles against us unjustifiable
Turkey announced that a Patriot air defense system is being prepared for operational readiness in eastern Turkey, as part of coordinated efforts with NATO to help protect the country's airspace amid ongoing regional tensions, Anadolu Agency reports.
In a statement, the Turkish Ministry of National Defense said that, due to recent regional developments, the Turkish Armed Forces remain "fully committed to securing the country and its citizens."
"In addition to the national measures we have implemented, NATO has improved air and missile defense measures. As part of this framework, a 'Patriot' system is currently located in Malatya and is being prepared for operational readiness to support the defense of our airspace," the Turkish Defense Ministry announced.
Turkey's announcement to activate its missile defense system came after the destruction of two Iranian missiles that were headed towards the country.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a phone conversation with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss the latest regional developments. Erdoğan told President Pezeshkian that the violation of Turkish airspace “cannot be justified for any reason” and that Turkey “will continue to take all necessary measures.”
Summoning the Iranian ambassador, the Turkish Foreign Ministry conveyed its protest regarding the second ballistic missile launched by Iran, which was destroyed by NATO air defenses in Turkish airspace.
