Trump said he would cut off trade with Spain, Madrid reacts: The US must

Spain said the US must enforce international law and trade agreements with the EU, responding to Donald Trump, who said he would cut off all trade with Spain after it refused to allow the US military to use its bases for missions related to attacks on Iran.

The Spanish government stressed that it is a "key member of NATO" and "an EU exporting power," according to El Pais.

"Spain respects its commitments and is a reliable trading partner for 195 countries in the world, including the United States, with which we maintain a historic and mutually beneficial commercial relationship. If the US government wants to review it, it must do so while respecting the autonomy of private companies, international legality and bilateral agreements between the European Union and the United States ," the government said in a statement published by the prime minister's office.

"Spain has behaved in a very bad way ," Trump told reporters yesterday, adding that he had asked Treasury Secretary Scott Besant to "cut off all business" with Madrid.

"We will cut off all business with Spain. We don't want to have anything to do with it ," he added.

"Spain has nothing we need, except good people, they are good people, but they don't have good leadership," he said.

Trump also complained that Spain has resisted efforts to increase defense spending to 5% of gross domestic product, as it has asked NATO allies.

Pedro Sanchez is expected to speak at 11:00 am today from the prime minister's office about the situation in the Middle East.
