Netanyahu reveals key information to Trump, what was discussed in the February 23 call

A secret phone call between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump on February 23 proved to be the decisive moment that led to the outbreak of war against Iran, Axios reports, citing three sources briefed on the conversation.
Netanyahu reportedly gave Trump a shocking tidbit: Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, and his closest advisers would gather Saturday morning at a designated location in Tehran — a target that could be hit with a single, devastating air strike. The call, kept secret by the White House and previously unreported, answered the question being asked internationally: why now?
The sources said Trump had long considered the possibility of an attack on Iran but had not decided on the timing. Information on the whereabouts of Khamenei and his inner circle was seen as an opportunity that neither he nor Netanyahu wanted to miss.
The call was the culmination of months of coordination between the two leaders. They had met twice and had held 15 phone conversations in the two months before the war began. The US and Israel had considered the possibility of an attack a week earlier but had postponed it for intelligence and operational reasons, including weather conditions.
An initial CIA assessment, ordered by Trump, confirmed information gathered by Israeli military intelligence about Khamenei’s presence at the meeting. By the Thursday before the attack, the agency had “fully confirmed” that the targets would all be in the same location.
On Friday at 3:38 p.m., Trump gave the final order for the attack. Eleven hours later, the bombs fell on Tehran. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed and the war in the Middle East had begun.
According to Axios, Trump had wanted to act earlier, even in early January, but Netanyahu had requested a delay to build public support and better coordinate the operation. The original plan called for late March or early April, but intelligence developments and concerns about the situation in Iran accelerated the deadline.
The US administration found itself in an unexpected situation, forced to publicly justify the attacks after they had already happened. Asked why there was no evacuation plan, Trump replied: “Because it all happened so quickly.”
