Another departure in the British government, Secretary General resigns

The British government's chief secretary, Chris Wormald, has resigned from his post as cabinet secretary and head of the Civil Service, just a few months after being appointed to the post in December 2024.

The Cabinet Office announced that the departure was made "by mutual consent", at a time when British media reports of dissatisfaction within 10 Downing Street over his performance. With the development, Wormald becomes the shortest-serving official in the history of the role.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer thanked him for more than 35 years of public service and confirmed that agreement had been reached for his immediate resignation. In the interim, his responsibilities will be shared between three senior officials until a successor is appointed.

The departure comes at a sensitive moment for the British executive, following the debate over the appointment of Peter Mandelson as ambassador to the United States and several other changes in the prime minister's inner circle.
