WHO seeks $518 million to contain Ebola outbreak

The World Health Organization and Africa CDC launched a joint response plan to the Ebola outbreak on Friday, requesting $518 million to contain the spread of the virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo and prevent its expansion in the region.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said after a visit to Ituri province that health teams are still struggling to cope with the pace of the virus' spread.

"The outbreak is progressing rapidly," Tedros said during a joint press conference, stressing that an effective response requires strong government leadership, community involvement and close coordination among international partners.

The joint plan, developed by WHO, Africa CDC and partner organizations, is based on the principle of “one plan, one budget, one team” and includes emergency coordination, epidemiological surveillance, laboratory testing, infection prevention, clinical treatment, community engagement, scientific research and logistics. According to Tedros, the implementation of the plan during this year requires funding of $ 518 million.

Meanwhile, the director general of the Africa CDC, Jean Kaseya, announced that so far 397 cases of Ebola and 63 deaths have been confirmed, while more than 5,000 contacts of infected people are being monitored by health authorities.

According to Kaseya, the mortality risk from the outbreak is estimated at around 15.9 percent. He added that 11 countries are currently considered at risk from the spread of the virus.

Since the outbreak was declared on 15 May, Ebola has expanded from one province and three health zones to three provinces and 26 affected health zones in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The epicenter of the outbreak remains in Ituri, where over 90 percent of cases and about 70 percent of reported deaths are recorded.
