Greece on alert, the most popular islands are engulfed by fires. Kefalonia, Fokida, Vonica and Zakynthos ready for evacuation
The fire that broke out in the early hours of the morning in Kefalonia is now under control, according to the president of the Faraklata Community, Evangelos Marinakis, who spoke to ERTNews about the efforts to extinguish it. “For the moment, the fire is under considerable control, we only have small re-emergences that are being monitored by the Fire Department and there is no reason for concern,” he said.
"The fire started at around 2:20 a.m. in a difficult mountainous area with low vegetation," he told journalist Katerina Douka, stressing that despite the large front and strong winds, "there was no danger to populated areas, thanks to the immediate intervention of ground forces."
As reported, the fire for which a 112 message was sent broke out between the villages of Faraklata and Prokopata, however, thanks to the "contribution of ground forces that was decisive in preventing the threatening movement of the fire."
Despite the large fire front, the ally of the firefighting forces, as Mr. Marinakis said, were the winds and aerial vehicles that are now helping to extinguish it. “We are in a very good phase,” underlined the president of the Faraklata Community, adding that firefighters and volunteers remain on the scene in case of any return of the fire.
The fire broke out near the PPC's central substation, but did not threaten it, while temporary power outages occurred in the central part of the island for safety reasons. Power is gradually being restored.
