France opens criminal investigation into Elon Musk's X platform

The Paris public prosecutor's office has opened a judicial investigation into the social platform X, owned by Elon Musk, over suspicions of algorithm manipulation and data abuse.

According to international media, the new investigation puts investigative judges in charge of the case and comes after tech billionaire Elon Musk failed to appear at a summons for questioning on April 20.

French prosecutors are seeking to formally investigate the companies X.AI Holdings Corp, X Corp and xAI, as well as Elon Musk himself and the former CEO of the X platform, Linda Yaccarino.

Authorities have announced that the people involved will be summoned to appear before judges. If they fail to appear, an arrest warrant may be issued against them, which would be considered a formal investigation.

The investigation has expanded in recent months to include suspicions of the distribution of child pornography and the creation of "deepfake" sexual content through the Grok artificial intelligence.

The case has heightened tensions between the US and Europe over the control of big tech companies and issues of freedom of expression on social platforms.

In July, Elon Musk denied the allegations, stating that the investigation by French authorities was "politically motivated."
