France is facing an unprecedented fire situation, leading the country into a state of emergency.

Firefighters battled for a third day to bring under control France's biggest wildfire in nearly eight decades, which has scorched more than 16,000 hectares, caused one death and destroyed dozens of homes. Drone footage showed large swaths of scorched vegetation.

One person has died, three are missing and two people, including a firefighter, are in critical condition, local authorities said.

“So far, the fire has not been brought under control,” said Christophe Magny, one of the officials leading the firefighting operation. He added that he hoped the flames could be brought under control later in the day.

The blaze, about 100km from the border with Spain, not far from the Mediterranean Sea, started on Tuesday and has spread rapidly.

It has already engulfed an area one and a half times the size of Paris. Officials have said it is the biggest fire in France since 1949.

The fire is now progressing more slowly, Environment Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher told France Info radio.

Scientists say the Mediterranean region's hotter, drier summers put it at high risk of wildfires.

France's weather office has warned of a new heatwave that will begin in other parts of southern France on Friday and last for several days.
