"The Sun" Investigation: Five Albanians Are Imprisoned Every Day in the UK! What the New Figures Show
According to an investigation by The Sun, around five Albanian citizens are sentenced to prison every day in the UK. Ministry of Justice data shows that in the year to last September, 1,865 Albanians were sent to prison.
Albanian nationals consistently make up the highest proportion of foreigners in British prisons, around 9% of the total of 75,289 current prisoners. A separate analysis by The Sun shows that during the first three months of this year, 58 Albanians were sentenced to at least a year in prison for crimes ranging from drug trafficking to human trafficking.
Under British law, foreigners who receive sentences of 12 months or more automatically receive a deportation order after serving their sentence.
New laws proposed by the Labour Party would allow some prisoners to be deported after a third of their sentence, up from half currently. Since the 2024 election, according to Labour, more than 58,500 illegal immigrants and convicted foreigners have been removed or deported from the UK.
The United Kingdom has a prison transfer agreement with Albania, which means that any Albanian sentenced to over four years by a British court can return to their country to serve their sentence.
A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: “The government has significantly increased the deportation of convicted foreign nationals, with over 8,700 removed since July 2024 – a 32% increase compared to the previous 19 months. Furthermore, we are changing the law to allow the deportation of foreign prisoners earlier than ever before.”
