Five dead in less than 3 months, what is happening in Albanian prisons?

Police announced this morning that a convicted domestic violence inmate has died at the QSUT, after being admitted to the Intensive Care Unit as a result of cardiac arrest.
This is the fifth case since the end of January of this year reported by the Directorate of Prisons of the loss of life of prisoners, mainly related to health problems.
Just two days ago, on April 3, another detainee, Medat Spahiu, lost his life in the same ward, as a result of a pulmonary embolism.
Meanwhile, on March 30, life-sentenced prisoner Hysni Qamil Repaj was urgently taken to Korça hospital, but could not survive after his health condition suddenly deteriorated.
Earlier, on March 20, a 41-year-old man arrested for a minor offense died in the Security Block in Tirana. Authorities said natural causes were suspected, but investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, the first case in this series dates back to January 25, when a 20-year-old man lost his life in Shkodra prison.
Five deaths in such a short period have raised doubts about what is happening in prisons, especially with those suffering from health problems and whether they are receiving proper medical treatment inside their cells while serving their sentences.
So far, authorities have not provided a full response linking all of these cases, but investigations into each of them are ongoing.
Convicted prisoner Hajri Ramazan Robi passed away at around 05:00 at the "Mother Teresa" University Hospital Center, in the Central Resuscitation Room, as a result of cardiorespiratory arrest.
At around 2:10 p.m., detainee Medat Spahiu passed away in the Central Resuscitation Room at the QSUT, as a result of a right pulmonary embolism.
At around 09:40, the life-sentenced prisoner, Hysni Qamil Repaj, born on 15.01.1962, born and residing in Shkodra, was urgently taken to the premises of the Korça Regional Hospital. During the examination procedures at this hospital, the prisoner's health condition deteriorated, ending in cardiac respiratory arrest. Despite the intervention and medical assistance provided, he was unable to be revived, resulting in his death.
At around 05:45, on "Mine Peza" street, at the Security Block, citizen BP, 41 years old, arrested on 18.03.2026 for the criminal offense of "Attempted Theft", died, suspected of natural causes. Work is underway to clarify the circumstances of the case.
The General Directorate of Prisons informs the public that at the Shkodra Penitentiary Institution, citizen Nicolae Ionnut Erion Deliver, born on 23.03.2005, born in Romania and residing in Shkodra, has passed away.
