Arrest of Nicolas Maduro by the US, Kaja Kallas: EU supports Venezuela's right to self-determination

Following the violent seizure of Venezuela's authoritarian ruler, Nicolás Maduro, the EU insists on the right of the Venezuelan people to self-determination.
“The right of the Venezuelan people to decide on their own future must be respected ,” wrote EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Kaja Kallas in a post on X. The statement is supported by all EU member states except Hungary.
The EU calls for a negotiated, democratic, inclusive and peaceful solution
The EU is in close contact with the US, as well as with regional and international partners, to ensure that a negotiated, democratic, inclusive and peaceful solution to the crisis can be found under Venezuelan leadership, the EU further said.
In her statement, the EU's top diplomat reiterated the call for respect for international law. Kallas stressed the importance of fighting international organized crime and drug trafficking, but at the same time that these challenges must be addressed through sustainable cooperation with full respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Respect for human rights is also of paramount importance during this critical time, for Kallas.
"All political prisoners currently held in Venezuela must be released unconditionally." EU member states are working closely together to ensure the safety of EU citizens, including those illegally detained in Venezuela./dw
