Analysis/ How important is the Strait of Hormuz?

A narrow waterway that bypasses Iran and Oman, the Strait of Hormuz is the main route for transporting crude oil from oil-rich countries like Saudi Arabia and Kuwait to the rest of the world.

The strait has remained a key factor since the start of the conflict, effectively closed by Tehran. In recent days, there have been only a few crossings, according to Kpler and other shipping data sources.

According to CNN, Iran controls the northern side of the strait. About 20 million barrels of oil, or about a fifth of global daily production, pass through the strait each day, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which calls the channel a critical oil chokepoint.

According to the EIA, there are very few alternative options for moving oil out of the strait if it is closed. The strait also carries about a fifth of the global trade in liquefied natural gas.

Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz after a US-Israeli attack on it began on February 28, causing severe disruption to the global economy. Clashes between US and Iranian forces have increased since the start of the month as negotiations have been frozen pending an Iranian response to the latest US proposal.
