Today, eight years since the passing of Dritëro Agolli

Today marks the 8th anniversary of the passing of renowned writer Dritëro Agolli.

The colossus of Albanian literature passed away at the age of 85, while his legacy left a rich repertoire of poetry, poems, stories, novellas, novels, dramas, film scripts, etc.

Dritëro Agolli was born on October 13, 1931, in Menkulas, Devoll district.

After receiving his first education in his hometown, he continued his studies at the Gjirokastra gymnasium, a school with a lot of tradition. He continued his studies at the Faculty of Arts in St. Petersburg. He worked for a long time as a journalist in the daily newspaper “Zëri i popullit” and for many years was the chairman of the League of Writers and Artists of Albania.

Dritëro Agolli was elected as a member of parliament for 30 consecutive years. His literary work is quite rich in different genres and types: poetry, poems, stories, novellas, novels, dramas, film scripts, etc.

His most notable poetic work is “Mother Albania” (1975), where the image of the Homeland is created with heroic traditions, with the many difficulties it encountered on its way and with the determination to face every obstacle and enemy. In a series of poems and verses, Dritëro Agolli reflects the spirit of the National Liberation War. In prose, he made a name for himself especially with the novel “Commissioner Memo”, as well as “The Rise and Fall of Comrade Zylo”. Some of his works have been adapted for film.

Dritëro Agolli's latest work is the book of poetry "Prit edhe pak" dedicated to his wife Sadije.

Dritëro Agolli is considered one of the best writers of all time in Albanian literature. For his extraordinary contribution, the great writer, Dritëro Agolli, in addition to other awards, has also been awarded the high title, “Honor of the Nation”. He was declared an “Honorary Citizen” of Tirana in 2003. Dritëro Agolli is the winner of four Republic awards and several annual literary awards. He was accepted as a member of the Florence Academy “Muzat” in Italy. In addition to the city of Tirana, he is an “Honorary Citizen” of the cities of Korça and Gjirokastra.

He passed away on February 3, 2017, in Tirana.
