World Cup/ High ticket prices, prosecutors demand explanations from FIFA

The attorneys general of New York and New Jersey launched an investigation into FIFA's pricing practices for matches at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.

Letitia James and Jennifer Davenport announced that they are investigating whether fans "may have been misled about the locations of the seats they were purchasing, and whether FIFA's public statements and ticket releases may have contributed to the price increases."

The investigation will focus on the ticketing process and seating maps at MetLife, which authorities say were changed after fans purchased tickets. The stadium was originally divided into four categories (1 through 4), with lower numbers for better seating areas.

After the sale began, FIFA created “new zones” and added a front section to each category. Fans complained that buyers for the new zones were “excluded from those seats and instead assigned to less desirable locations, including seats away from the pitch or behind the goals.”

Ticket prices for group matches in the US started at $60 for a limited number of tickets and reached over $600 according to the New York Times; face value tickets for the final were priced at up to $10,990.

Prices rose even higher on resale platforms, with extreme bids reportedly as high as $2 million for the final. In response to the outrage, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced an initiative to sell $50 tickets to city residents.

Davenport stated that "To be honest about ticket sales it's not complicated" and accused FIFA of creating a "mass of confusion, lack of authenticity and outrageous prices."

Letitia James said residents "deserved a fair opportunity for affordable tickets" and that "fans should be able to trust that the tickets they buy will be the ones they get."

FIFA did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment; the organization had previously said its pricing strategy reflects market demand for each match.

Earlier this month, California Attorney General Rob Bonta also requested information from FIFA to assess whether California law was violated. The 2026 World Cup begins on June 11; the first match in New Jersey is on June 13, and eight matches are scheduled there, including the final on July 19.
