'Toyota Yaris'/ Former Vlora Chief Prosecutor, Aurel Zarka, is released from prison

The appeal of the GJKKO has released from prison the former chief prosecutor of Vlora, Aurel Zarka, who was convicted for the 'Toyota Yaris' case.

Zarka was held in custody since June 2024 and was sentenced by the Criminal Court of Kosovo to 4 years in prison for "corruption" and "unlawful influence" in the case known as the Toyota Yaris, a sentence that was reduced to 2 years and 8 months due to a summary trial.

MEDIA RELEASE
The Special Court of Appeal for Corruption and Organized Crime, with a panel composed of judges Florjan Kalaja (presiding), Engert Pëllumbi (member) and Tereza Merkaj (member), today, 09.05.2026, ruled on criminal case no. 131 act, dated 08.05.2026 registration, on the appeal of the appellant AZ:
“1. Termination of the personal security measure “Arrest in prison”, provided for by Article 238 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, determined by Decision no. 87 Act, dated 28.07.2024 of the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime, against the defendant AZ
2. Order for the immediate release of the defendant AZ from the detention facilities (IEPD Durrës)” and decided:
1. The finding of the termination of the security measure “Arrest in prison” determined against the defendant Mr. AZ by Decision no. 87 Act, dated 28.07.2024 and verified by Decision no. 92, dated 31.07.2024 of the Special Court of First Instance for Corruption and Organized Crime.
2. Ordering the immediate release of the defendant Mr. AZ from the detention facilities, if his personal freedom is not restricted for another legal reason. 3. This decision may be appealed within 45 days, from the day after the reasoned notification of the decision.
