Rama "kneeled" before Meloni again, Italian media: The action has become a ritual
At the Conference on the Recovery of Ukraine in Rome, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama knelt for the third time before Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Italian media describe this gesture as a tradition of Rama in meetings with Meloni.
"Libero Quotidiano" writes that Rama made this move in May, during Meloni's visit to Tirana, where he dramatically knelt in front of his Italian counterpart. The agreements between Albania and Italy on migration have strengthened their relationship, but this gesture has also caused reactions in the Albanian opposition and some lawyers.
“Just like last May during Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s visit to Tirana, the Albanian Prime Minister arrives in Rome for the plenary session of the Conference for the Reconstruction of Ukraine and kneels before his Italian counterpart. But he kneels dramatically, with hands clasped together, in front of photographers and television cameras that are ready to capture his official greeting with the Prime Minister, the host. Then they hug before exchanging a few cordial words. The appreciation between the two leaders was born years ago and was strengthened by the Rome-Tirana agreements on immigration. A protocol that has angered the opposition (and even some lawyers). This is also because the insult is double: Rama is a socialist and an ally of the Democratic Party in the European Parliament. In short, we are on the verge of human and political betrayal.” , states the article in “Libero Quotidiano”.
"Secoloditalia" points out that Rama has done this for the third time, after in January during a meeting in Abu Dhabi Meloni jokingly reprimanded him, saying: "You have to stop this story." But Rama did not stop and repeated the action in May and now in Rome.
“Edi Rama did it again: for the third time, he knelt before Giorgia Meloni. The scene, which has already involved the Albanian Prime Minister on at least two occasions, was repeated at the Conference on the Recovery of Ukraine, during the Prime Minister’s welcoming ceremony of visiting leaders.
The Albanian Prime Minister had greeted Meloni in the same way during their meeting at Sustainability Week in Abu Dhabi on January 15 (even giving him a scarf for his birthday), at which point Meloni jokingly reprimanded him: "You have to stop this story." A suggestion that Rama did not take into account: in fact, on May 16 he did it again, welcoming the Prime Minister in Tirana at the summit of the European Political Community," the article by "Secoloditalia" states .
