"Justice is being blackmailed", Krasniqi: The political elite is the most corrupt part in Albania

Political and media pressures are negatively affecting the functioning of justice in the country. This was stated by political scientist Afrim Krasniqi, who described the blackmail that is being done to justice figures as a step backward for justice reform.
"The behavior that was done to Mr. Meta in the case of the arrest was nonsense and a backward development in the concept of the image of Albania and the rule of law, but also the public and denigrating pressure that is being put on the prosecutors of the case and the judges of the case is also a backward development, for the quality of the justice reform and is a kind of obstruction, not only obstruction, but also blackmail that political and media groups are doing to the figures of justice. We must let justice speak and we must see if the processes offer us a more qualitative justice than the past justice. I think this should be the essence", he emphasized in Off the Record with Andrea Dangli on A2 CNN.
According to him, in some cases, including that of former President Ilir Meta, more political than legal arguments have been used. Krasniqi emphasizes that it is more an attempt to make a political show than to conduct a due legal process.
"Mr. Meta has changed teams several times and so far we have seen more political arguments than legal ones. Even in the case of the mayor, even the recent decision to arrest a deputy who is himself under investigation, is more of an attempt to make a political show than to conduct a regular legal process. But this is a cost that comes naturally, a country that does not have a tradition of such processes. That is, most of those who are called high-ranking officials arrested during the tradition have been mainly on semi-political and semi-legal charges."
According to him, Albania continues to fall short of expectations, with a high level of corruption, mainly among political elites. Krasnqii stressed that change will only come when politicians face justice and follow the standards of Western democracies.
"Albania continues to be a country far from the aspirations and expectations and opportunities it had. a country with a high level of corruption and a country where the political elites are the most corrupt part of society and where they are to some extent the main pillars that maintain institutional corruption in Albania. The great corruption in Albania is not done by the ordinary citizen, it is not done by the unprotected citizen, but by the people who have access to decision-making in parliament, in the executive and in political parties and they continue to recycle each other and continue to refuse in every form and with every possible pressure to face justice. The day when all politicians will behave with the standard that Western politicians behave."
