"The alliance with America is not negotiable", Giorgia Meloni: Italy-US relations do not depend on who wins the elections

As tensions rise between the United States and the European Union, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reaffirmed Italy's commitment to its alliance with the US, stating that the country should not be forced to choose between Washington and Brussels.
In a recent interview, Meloni dismissed the notion of a binary choice between the two powers as “childish” and “superficial,” stressing that Italy’s foreign policy will be guided by its national interests. Her remarks come as divisions within the EU widen over geopolitical strategy, particularly over relations with the U.S. and handling of global conflicts.
Meloni's stance reflects broader concerns that Europe, as a political entity, lacks cohesion in an increasingly multipolar world. She warned that without prioritizing the national interests of individual member states, the EU risks fragmentation and diminishing influence on the global stage.
The Italian leader also criticized the reaction of some European officials to US President Donald Trump, arguing that political tensions should not damage transatlantic strategic ties. Her comments signal a push for a more pragmatic European approach that balances cooperation with both the US and other global powers while preserving national priorities.
Meloni's full statement:
"Are you with Europe or with the US? I am with Italy, as always. I am in Europe, I am for the West. What does this mean? The electoral campaign is over. And the idea that the relations between you and your counterparts change depending on who wins the elections is something I will never follow. Our relationship with the United States is the most important relationship we have. The US has always been our first ally. We respect them and we want to strengthen this cooperation."
