Rama's action/ Pubs in Tirana close in protest: 600 jobs at risk

Bars in several areas of Tirana have been closed today in protest by owners against the decision to vacate public spaces. They say they are regular taxpayers and have not received any official letter regarding this decision.

"We pay the tax for outdoor spaces, according to the spaces we have declared and everything is done through the bank. I pay 1 million new lek per year. We claim that we are not in a public space, but in a private area and we are asked to vacate it. We have not received any official letter, they simply pass by and say that there is an order. A signed letter should come to notify us that we have violated the law, and on this basis we should be asked to vacate," said Bledar Mehmeti, the owner of the bar.

The owners say that within this complex there are over 40 premises and over 600 employees, who risk losing their jobs if the space is vacated.

"If 600 people work today, it can go down to 150, because this is the capacity, we cannot keep people in vain. It is also moral damage, because employees create a bad perception of businesses. If you look at the real value, it costs someone 100 thousand new lek per month, someone else 150 thousand", added Mehmeti.

The owners of the premises have announced a protest on Friday at 10:00 in front of the Prime Minister's Office, to demand their rights.
