According to custom, friends and family cover them in cinnamon, often tying them to a bench or pole in a public place to get a real “shower” of spice. To make the cinnamon stick better, the person is often wet with water or egg.
This custom dates back to the 16th century, when spice traders often postponed marriage due to frequent travel and work commitments. They became the butt of jokes from friends and family, a tradition that over time turned into a fun way to celebrate friendship.
When the person reaches the age of 30 and is still single, the tradition becomes even more "spicy": the cinnamon is replaced with black pepper, making the experience more intense and unexpected.
