NASA: Asteroid "2024 YR4" no longer threatens Earth, but in 2032 it risks colliding with... the Moon
The news brought relief earlier this year, when predictions suggested a possible strike in the Southern Hemisphere before Christmas 2032. However, a new scenario has come to light – this time the spotlight is on the Moon.
According to the latest data analyzed by NASA scientists, in collaboration with observations from the James Webb Space Telescope, the probability that “2024 YR4” will hit the Moon on December 22, 2032, has increased significantly. According to the updated calculations, the chance of an impact is 4.3 percent – an increase from previous estimates of 1.7 and 3.8 percent.
If this collision occurs, NASA predicts that the asteroid will create a crater about 1,200 meters in diameter on the surface of the Moon. However, experts emphasize that, even in the event of an impact, the event is not expected to affect the Moon's orbit or have consequences for Earth, including impacts on ocean tides.
The asteroid will be invisible to ground-based telescopes until 2028, when it is expected to be observed again to more accurately determine its final trajectory. In the meantime, the international astronomy community continues to monitor this celestial object intensively.
Although the Moon has experienced many impacts from such bodies in its history, this would be the first time that such an impact could be observed "live" from Earth - even with binoculars in favorable weather conditions.
Meanwhile, scientists remain focused on ensuring that every possible scenario is under full control and documented for scientific purposes.
