Blue-furred dogs have been spotted for the first time near the Chernobyl nuclear disaster site in northern Ukraine, surprising the caretakers and scientists who care for them.
The "Dogs of Chernobyl" group, which has been caring for stray animals in the area since 2017, posted on social media photos of several unusually blue dogs wandering the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone.
" We don't know the reason yet, but we're trying to catch them to find out what's going on," the post's description says, explaining that the color change has occurred recently.
According to the caretakers, the dogs may have come into contact with a chemical substance, but they emphasize that the animals appear active and in good health.
On April 26, 1986, the explosion of one of the reactors at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, near the city of Pripyat, released large amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere, while residents were urgently evacuated.
The dogs seen in the area today are descendants of pets abandoned after the disaster, who have lived and bred for generations in an environment where the radiation level is six times higher than what a human can withstand.
A 2023 study, led by Norman J. Kleiman, an environmental health scientist at Columbia University, analyzed the genetic material of 116 dogs in the area and found significant genetic differences between them and other dogs in the rest of Ukraine.
According to Kleiman, these changes indicate that the animals have genetically evolved to adapt to the toxic environment in which they live.
" Somehow, two small populations of dogs have managed to survive in this extremely toxic environment, " Kleiman explained.
The study identified 52 genes that may be linked to exposure to environmental pollution at the nuclear power plant. According to the author, this research could help understand the effects of long-term radiation exposure and how to better mitigate health risks to humans and animals.
