EMRI/ Kurti appoints Kosovo's chief negotiator with the EU

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has appointed Jeton Zulfaj as Kosovo's chief negotiator with the European Union. "Zulfaj will coordinate Kosovo's European integration process, supported by the relevant state structures," the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.

Zulfaj has been Kurti's political advisor since March 2021, and with the new appointment, he replaces the previous chief negotiator, Besnik Bislimi.

Bislimi has also led Kosovo's negotiations with Serbia, mediated by the European bloc in Brussels. In February of this year, the Government announced that in this dialogue process, Kosovo will be represented by Glauk Konjufca, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora. In addition to his role as chief negotiator with the EU, according to the announcement, Zulfaj will also be the National Coordinator for the Reform and Growth Instrument (RGF), serving as the main coordinating authority on behalf of the Government for all issues related to this instrument.

Kosovo is the only country in the Western Balkans without candidate status for membership in the European Union. It submitted its application for membership at the end of 2022, but it has not yet been reviewed. The Kurti 3 government was voted in on February 11, however, Kosovo continues to face uncertainty due to the freezing of the work of the Assembly. The ruling party, the Vetevendosje Movement, has taken to the Constitutional Court a decree by the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, to dissolve the Assembly, in the inability to elect a new president. Osmani's mandate expires on April 4. The Constitutional Court has decided to freeze the work of the Assembly until March 31, until it is clarified whether Osmani's decree was promulgated in accordance with the law. /REL
