Message from antiquity: the mosaic in Turkey that defies envy

An ancient mosaic, recently discovered in southern Turkey, is attracting the attention of archaeologists and researchers for its special message.
The discovery was made in the ancient city of Syedra, near Alanya in the province of Antalya, where experts discovered a large mosaic measuring about 15 square meters, dating from the 4th–6th centuries AD.
The mosaic contains an inscription in ancient Greek, which roughly translates to; “Let the jealous one burst with envy.” This unusual message is believed to have had a symbolic protective function, reflecting beliefs of the time against the evil eye and negative energies.
According to archaeologists, the mosaic likely adorned the entrance to a public or private building, serving as a warning or statement to visitors. The ornaments surrounding the inscription are carefully crafted and show a high level of artistic craftsmanship for the period.
The discovery provides valuable insight into the cultural and spiritual life of communities in the region during the late antique period. It also shows that concepts such as envy and protection from negative energies have been part of the human psyche since ancient times.
Archaeologists continue to study the area to discover more about the surrounding structures and the role this mosaic may have had in the context of the ancient city, thus adding another piece to the mosaic of the region's rich history.
