Brain ischemias quadruple, the doctor: 10 patients a day are hospitalized due to hemorrhage

Brain hemorrhages and ischemias are increasing every year. In the neurovascular service of QSUT, an average of 10 patients per day with cerebrovascular accidents are admitted; 20% of them are hemorrhage (rupture of blood vessels) and 80% are ischemia (blockage of blood vessels).
The head of this service, Eris Ranxha, emphasizes that the upward trajectory has exceeded the forecasts.
“It is a growing morbidity; this is an international emergency. After the 2022 studies, it was predicted that cases would double, but in reality, they are quadrupling. The increase in frequency is very large," Ranxha told Euronews Albania.
Hemorrhages are often affected by abnormal blood vessels, while ischemias are caused by health problems such as hypertension or diabetes. Both have lifestyle-related risk factors.
"Obesity must be avoided, we must not fall prey to a sedentary lifestyle, be active and maintain a good diet quality. Of course, there are chronic diseases that affect this situation, such as diabetes and hypertension, " explained Ranxha.
But what are the signs we should evaluate to seek help in the case of brain hemorrhages?
"One of the most characteristic and fastest signs is pain. If you have a severe headache that does not go away with painkillers, then it is a situation that needs to be evaluated. The most alarming signs are paralysis and the inability to move, which indicate that the brain is suffering and require evaluation as soon as possible," explained Ranxha.
Hemorrhages occur at all ages, while ischemia is more common after the age of 50; however, recently cases are also being seen at younger ages.
