Emigration reduces the population to 2.3 million inhabitants/ Men flee to the

According to the latest data published by INSTAT, the population of Albania on January 1, 2025 was around 2.3 million inhabitants. Compared to the previous year, this represents a 1.2% decrease in the number of inhabitants, confirming the continuation of the negative trend that has characterized recent years.

Although the natural increase for 2024 was positive, with 1,208 more births than deaths, this was not enough to stop the overall population decline. The factor that continues to have the greatest impact is migration. Even during 2025, net migration remained negative, with an outflow of 28,836 people abroad. Although this is a lower figure compared to the previous year, it remains a worrying indicator for the country's demographic structure.

This is also reflected in the increase in the median age, which has increased from 43.5 to 44.3 years. The Albanian population is aging and this phenomenon is increasingly visible in all demographic indicators. Meanwhile, the youth dependency ratio has decreased slightly, from 23.9% to 23.8%. At the same time, the gender ratio shows that there are 97.8 males for every 100 females in the country, a disproportion that is mainly related to the fact that males emigrate at a higher rate. On the other hand, the elderly dependency ratio is around 33%, indicating that the working-age population is increasingly bearing the social burden.

At the regional level, the Tirana region has recorded a slight population increase of 0.2% compared to the previous year. This increase is a result of urbanization, the concentration of jobs and the better educational opportunities offered by the capital. On the other hand, the northern regions continue to record a decline. Shkodra has lost 2.5% of its population, while Kukës 2.3%, ranking among the areas with the highest demographic contraction.

Tirana remains the most populous area of the country, comprising 32.2% of the total Albanian population. Behind it, cities such as Fier and Elbasan occupy 9.9% and 9.6% of the population respectively, maintaining a significant weight in the geographical distribution of residents.
