"Daily Express": Albania – the fascinating European country closer and cheaper than Thailand

If you're looking for the beauty of Thailand, but at an affordable price – and a shorter flight from the UK – there's a hidden gem in Europe that we recommend you visit.

"Albania is a beautiful country located in Southeast Europe, on the Balkan Peninsula," said Clare Tobin, CEO of travel company Wild Frontiers.

"Its neighboring countries include Greece, Montenegro and North Macedonia. With its impressive mountainous landscape and breathtaking coastline, Albania has an unspoiled beauty – which is now a rarity in Europe," she added.

“The Albanian Riviera is a fantastic option for those looking for a paradise vacation – with white sandy beaches, and also affordable, accessible and less crowded with tourists,” said Claire.

For tourists who adore the sea, Ksamil on the Albanian Riviera is an ideal alternative – similar to tropical Thailand.

Located near the city of Saranda, it is often called the Albanian Caribbean thanks to its white sandy beaches and turquoise waters.

"Ksamil is a small fishing village that many tourists have not yet heard of. It offers the most peaceful atmosphere for a relaxing holiday. The area is known for its rich history and exceptional beaches, offering high-end tourism for visitors looking for an unforgettable holiday in Europe," said Claire.

Besides being beautiful and quieter than other more famous destinations, Albania is also very affordable.

"A three-course meal for two people costs about £42. A beer costs about £2 and a coffee about £1.30," she added.

"Traveling in Albania is relatively cheap, as are excursions. There are also many free activities, whether it's exploring local towns or relaxing on one of Albania's many beaches. The daily cost per person in Albania is around £40," said Claire.

"If you want to explore this amazing place – the easiest way to get there is to fly to the neighboring town of Corfu in Greece, and then take a ferry to the town of Saranda. The flight takes about three hours from London and the ferry ride is 30 minutes," she said.
