Trump pulls 700 federal immigration agents from Minneapolis
The Trump administration has immediately withdrawn 700 federal immigration officers from Minneapolis. This was announced by “Border Czar” Tom Homan at a press conference, according to which the partial withdrawal will leave 2,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and other federal agents in the city.
He added that any further withdrawal of agents depends on the cooperation of local law enforcement and the wider community.
Homan was chosen to lead the operation in Minneapolis following protests against the fatal shootings of two American citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, by federal agents in January.
In December, US President Donald Trump ordered a wave of federal immigration agents into Minnesota as part of a crackdown on illegal immigration into the US.
About 2,000 agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agencies have been deployed to Minneapolis since January 14, officials said, as well as 800 additional U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents, including Border Patrol personnel.
Homan was recruited to lead the Minneapolis operation after mass protests against the fatal shootings of two American citizens – Renee Good and Alex Pretti – by federal agents in Minnesota in January.
In response, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called for federal immigration enforcement agents to leave the state capital region entirely, while Trump said his administration would "de-escalate tensions a little bit."
