Tragic in India/ Tennis player killed by father due to jealousy

India has been rocked by the murder of 25-year-old tennis player Radhika Yadav, who was shot dead by her father in her home. The account of the husband, 49-year-old Deepak Yadav, is chilling:

“I shot him three times in the back while he was cooking.” One bullet lodged in his neck and two more hit him in the back.

Her father said he committed the crime out of humiliation: "They made fun of me for being financially dependent on her." After the crime, he was arrested by police and pleaded guilty without resistance.

As Kuldeep Yadav, the victim's uncle, told officers, "I heard a noise and went up to the first floor, where my brother lives.

"After I entered, I saw my niece Radhika lying bleeding in the kitchen and a gun in the living room. My son and I picked her up and drove her to Gurugram Hospital."

However, doctors could only declare him dead.

Although not a world-class tennis star, Radhika Yadav was a familiar face in India. She had played 36 singles matches and 7 doubles matches on the ITF tour, the third tier of professional tennis, below the WTA and WTA 125 tours.

Her last appearances were in March 2024 in singles and in June 2023 in doubles, before a forced hiatus due to a shoulder injury.

Despite the interruption of her competitive career, Radhika had not stopped, she had founded her own tennis academy and achieved financial independence.

She was young, modern, and independent; perhaps too much so, according to her father. Tensions within the family had escalated in recent months.

According to the evidence gathered, the husband could not bear to be left out or ridiculed. He repeatedly asked her to close the Academy, but Radhika always refused.

This refusal was the turning point for her father. He shot her three times while she was in the kitchen.
